1933 Who’s Who Page Signed by HOFer – Bill Klem – Beans Reardon – George Barr Removed from the first edition of “Who’s Who in Baseball” volume features National League Umpires signed by 3 of the league’s finest in pencil. The page measures 8” x 10.5” and has been signed by the following:
• Bill Klem (D. 1951) known as the father of umpires, Klem umped in the big leagues from 1905 to 1941. In that time, he worked 18 World Series, which is a Major League record to this day. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame, posthumously in 1953 • Beans Reardon (D. 1984) NL umpire from 1926-49. He officiated in 5 World Series: 1930, 1934, 1939, 1943 and 1949. He also umpired in 3 All-Star Games (1936, 1940, 1948), calling balls and strikes in all three contests; and he was one of the umpires for the 3-game series to determine the NL champion in 1946. He was the plate umpire when Babe Ruth hit his 714th and final home run in 1935. He was notably the basis for the central figure, the home plate umpire, in Norman Rockwell's famous painting Bottom of the Sixth. • George Barr (D. 1974) is the only modern umpire to be assigned consecutive WS (1948-49). As the plate umpire during a rainy 1949 game in Boston, Barr ejected the Braves' Connie Ryan after Ryan protested the decision not to call the game by kneeling in the on-deck circle wearing a raincoat.
