Nestor Chavez (D.1969) & 1966 Waterbury Giants Team Signed Baseball San Francisco AA

Offered is an official NL (Giles) baseball signed by the 1966 Waterbury Giants AA minor league team (Eastern League farm team for the San Francisco Giants) that derives from manager, Andy Gilbert’s collection.

Signed by 21 members of the team including future or past Major Leaguers: Andy Gilbert (D. 1992), Bob Taylor, Dave Marshall, Al Stanek, Damaso Blanco, and…..

Nestor Chavez (D. 1969 at the age of 21 in airplane crash).  Chavez played for the 1967 San Francisco Giants  and was one of the best pitching prospects in the Giants farm system. At 19, he was called up to the big club after a combined 47–20 mark in the minors. In two games with the Giants, he compiled a 1–0 record with three strike outs and a 0.00 ERA in five innings. After the season, he had shoulder surgery and was sidelined for more than a year.

On March 16, 1969, Chávez was ready to start his rehabilitation in the minors. Chávez died in Maracaibo, Zulia State, in one of the worst aircraft tragedies in Venezuelan history, after Viasa Flight 742 struck power lines while taking off, killing all 84 aboard and 71 on the ground. He was 21 years old.

Chavez’s autograph is considered one of the most elusive signatures of 1960’s debut players.  Less than a handful of his autographs have surfaced over the years!
