1947 Brooklyn Dodgers Celebrate Winning the NL Pennant with Dan Bankhead Original TYPE I photo PSA/DNA
On September 24, 1947. The Dodgers had clinched the pennant because the Cubs had defeated the St. Louis Cardinals and put the Dodgers in the position to go to the World Series. Pictured is the Dodgers team with manager, Burt Shotton sitting at the piano. The First African American pitcher in Major League Baseball (and third African American after Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby) is pictured in the back. He doesn’t seem happy to have been pushed into the background. The entire team is pictured (Jackie Robinson, we believe is on the far left of the photo top row, but pretty much cropped out). Gil Hodges, Ralph Branca, Carl Furillo, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, and Arky Vaughan can be seen in the photo.
Original newspaper caption pasted to the back of the photo that ran in the New York Daily Mirror.
