Arthur Bidwill - Clem Lane multi-signed 1955 Arch Ward Funeral Guest Book Page

As a beloved sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, Arch Ward certainly had an impressive guest list at his funeral. This guest book, signed by over a thousand attendees includes signatures from Harry Stuhldreher and Elmer Layden (of the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame), Joe Stydahar, Paddy Driscoll, Elmer Otto, Ollie Matson, Fred Lindstrom, Gabby Hartnett, William Harridge, Charles Comiskey, Tom Meany, and many more.

Offered is just one page from that guest book. The more notable signatures on this page include the following:

Arthur J. Bidwill  (D. 1985) was the younger brother of Chicago Cardinals owner (and FB HOFer) Charles Bidwill.  He was pretty notorious in his own right.  In addition to being an attorney, he served as an Illinois State Sentor from 1935-1972

Charles F. Carpentier (D. 1964) was an American businessman and politician.

Clement "Clem" Quirke Lane was the city editor for the Chicago Daily News from 1942 to 1958. Born in 1897, he joined the Chicago Daily News after high school, where during Prohibition he worked the crime beat. As described in Capone: The Life and World of Al Capone, legend has it that during "slow nights," Lane and counterpart James Doherty of the Chicago Tribune invented often-comical nicknames for many of Chicago's underworld figures, including "Greasy Thumb" Gusik, "Loudmouth" Levine, and "Violet" Fusco

Mickey O’Shea (D) was a middleweight boxer in the 1930s.

The signatures range from 8 - 10/10. The page measures 6.5” x 8.” Included with this item is a copy of the full LOA from PSA/DNA that covered the overall funeral book.

Note: The more notable signatures have been boxed in red on the scan, but the red boxes are not present on the actual page.
