October 7, 1961 Chicago Packers – One Year NBA Team Charity Exhibition Game Program – Chicago Cubs

For the 1961-62 season, The NBA returned to Chicago after 11 years after the Stags who made it to the first championship series folded. The new team known as the Packers, who are the first expansion team to join the NBA in 12 years were not very good as they finished in last place with an awful 18-62 record. However, first round draft pick Walt Bellamay became an instant star winning the Rookie of the Year while finishing 2nd to Wilt Chamberlain with an impressive 31.6 ppg, and finishing 3rd in rebounds to Chamberlain and Bill Russell with a 19.0 per game.

This would be the only year that the franchise was named the Chicago Packers.  During the 1962-63 season, the team name was changed to the Zephyrs.  The following year, the team would then move to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Bullets.

Offered is a super rare 7 page program for the Chicago Packers exhibition game and clinic that was played on October 6, 1961 at the University Chicago Field House. Two games were played the Olde Tymers which were made up of several college basketball players and four members of the Chicago Cubs – Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Solly Drake, and George Altman. Al Smith of the Chicago White Sox also played in the game vs the Public and Catholic Hi Coaches.

The second game was the White and Blue game which was a Chicago Packers intersquad game (see scorecard).  Many of the players were players who never made the team.  Participants included:

Walt Bellamy, Vern Hatton, Jack Turner, Barney Cable, Charlie Tyra, Andy Johnson, York Larese, Slick Leonard, Dave Piontek, Archie Dees, Horace Walker.

In nice shape, scored, all pages intact, fold down the center from being placed in the original fan’s back pocket!
