September 3, 1948 Cleveland Browns 19 L.A. Dons 14 AAFC Ticket Stub – Len Ford, Ara Parseghian, & Wedemeyer Pro Debuts PSA Pop 1

On September 3, 1948, the Cleveland Browns hosted the Los Angeles Dons at Cleveland Municipal Stadium in the first game of the season for the Browns in AAFC football action.  The eventual World Champions, won the game 19-14.  Future Pro Football Hall of Famers, Otto Graham, Marion Motley, and Lou Groza had exceptional games.

Making their AAFC and professional football debuts were future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Len Ford out of Michigan who played his first two years of professional football with the Los Angeles Dons.  When the AAFC dissolved after the 1949 season, he would end up with the Cleveland Browns where he would end up being selected to the NFL’s 1950s All-Decade Team.

Other notable professional debuts during this game was the coming out party for future College Football Hall of Famer, Ara Parseghian, who scored a Touchdown in his professional football debut and would become one of the best known college football coaches in the 1960’s when he took over the Notre Dame football program (winning two National Championships).

Also that day, Herman Wedemeyer would enter his first professional football game, after a storied college football career at St. Mary’s College (he would later be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame).  Although today, many folks may not recall his football career; he will be forever immortalized for playing Sgt/Detective “Duke” Lukela on Hawaii Five-O (1972-80).
