Steve Prefontaine - (D. 1975 at age 24) once held the American record in the seven distance track events from the 2,000 meters to the 10,000 meters. He was considered one fo the greatest American runners of all time. Finished a devastating 4th in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Prefontaine was killed on May 30, 1975 at the age of 24 in a car accident. He is considered the greatest runner of his generation and was the original face of Nike shoes.
Offered is a 4.5 x 8.5 inch original Associated Press TYPE III photograph stamped on back from Nov. 20 and 21, 1973 with original paper caption.
“NCAA winner – Steve Prefontaine of the University of Oregon nears the finish line shortly before he became the second man in history to win three NCAA cross country championships. Prefontaine ran the six-mile race at Hangman Valley Golf Course in Spokane, Wash., in 28:14:8.
