In Wilt Chamberlain’s three years on the basketball team at Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia (same school that Will Smith and Seth Green would later attend); he took them to 3 City Championships. In his first year on the Varsity basketball squad in 1953 at the age of 16; they would go all the way to the City Championship (see our other ticket for the Public School title).
This ticket dated March 6, 1953 is the 2nd earliest known ticket (the earliest, being from the Public School title game). from the G.O.A.T.’s basketball career. Programs have popped up over the years, but never a full ticket or ticket stub. Graded PSA 2.
On March 6, 1953; Overbrook High School would play West Catholic for the City High School Championship; played at the Palaestra (University of Pennsylvania’s arena). This game pitted the Champions of the Public High schools in Philadelphia against the Champions of the Catholic School League (there were very few private schools in Philly at the time other than Catholic schools).
This was the first of 3 Overall City Titles that Wilt would play in (Overbrook would take the titles in 1954 & 1955; his junior and seniors years). However, during Wilt’s sophomore campaign, West Catholic beat an overmatched Overbrook by a score of 54-42. Wilt was rendered somewhat ineffective with 4 men covering him. Despite this fact, the Dipper still put up 29 points despite 16 rebounds. Basically, the rest of the team self-destructed that night.
In the double header, the consolation game was played by Northeast vs LaSalle (the losing teams for the Public and Catholic High School Championships). Future Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, and future Warriors teammate; Guy Rodgers put up 35 points for NE in a win over LaSalle.
This was a seriously close game as future Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, and future Warriors teammate; Guy Rodgers put up 26 points for the Northeast squad.
