The Denver Nuggets were a professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Nuggets joined the National Basketball League (NBL) for the 1948–49 season, and then joined the National Basketball Association when the NBL was absorbed by the Basketball Association of America to create the NBA for the 1949–50 season. The Nuggets were the first major professional sports franchise in Colorado, and the first NBA franchise west of the Mississippi. Before that, they were one of the top AAU teams, then joining the ABL, before they became a member of the ABL.
Likewise, the Sacramento Senators were a top AAU team before joining the ABL.
Many top NBA, NBL, BAA basketball players played in the late 40’s for ABL teams before moving on to other leagues. Top players in the league included: Jim Pollard, Hank Luisetti, Ace Gruenig, Alex Hannum, and Jack McCracken.
We offer a super rare program from January 3, 1947 played at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento featuring Sacramento star, Jim Rickert who was an All-American in college at Santa Clara which had quite a basketball program in the 40’s and 50’s.
The Denver Nuggets featured player/coach – Jack McCracken (Naismith HOF) and Ace Gruenig who was one of the top AAU players in the 30’s and 40’s – also a member of the Naismith Basketball HOF).
We offer this super rare program with no missing pages, tight binding, some pictures of the Senators players, only writing is from the original fan keeping score. Sacramento featured many west coast College All-Americans. Attendance for the games were sparse.
Sacramento upset the Nuggets on this particular night in this ABL game 43-35. Tony Braginetz (former All-American) scored 15 points for the winning team. Jim Rickert, Al White, and Roy Tamm also were a big help in winning the game. Art Mathison of the Nuggets was the high scorer on his team with 11. Notable, the 2 future HOF’ers in the game, Jack McCracken and Ace Gruenig were shut down by Sacramento.
