This John E. Hood original photo shows Baltimore Elite Giants ballplayers, Joe Wiley & Johnny Washington showing off their fielding skills.

Joe Wiley was an infielder with Baltimore in 1947 and played for the Birmingham Black Barons with Willie Mays in 1948 before moving on to the minor leagues in the late 40’s – early 50’s.

Johnny Washington was a first basemen in the Negro Leagues in the 1930’s – 40’s; playing for several team.  In 1940, with the New York Black Yankees; he hit .377 and was the Negro League batting Champion.  His career was interrupted by 3 years, serving in World War II before returning to professional baseball. 

This unique 6.5” x 8” photo is crystal clear and if you look closely, there are two men far off in the outfield working on the fence of the stadium with breathtaking period Coca Cola and Dr. Pepper signs.
