1961 Willie Mays Swamped by Autograph Collectors Outside His Hotel Original TYPE I Photo
Offered is an original TYPE 1 United Press International 9” x 7” photo of Willie Mays from July 24, 1961. This was the first time that Willie had been back in New York as a ballplayer since the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1959. The Giants were in town to play a game that night against the New York Yankees in a benefit game, “Mayor’s Sandlot benefit Game”
This photo came out of the SPORT Magazine archive (stamped on back) along with UPI stamp and has the original paper caption. This was meant to be used in article in Sport Magazine about Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, “What it Means to be a Super-star Celebrity.”
