America’s First Golf Legend - Jerome Travers circa 1905-09 Original TYPE I Photo

Jerome Travers (1887–1951) was a legendary American amateur golfer who dominated the sport in the early 20th century. Born in New York City, Travers gained fame for his exceptional precision and mental toughness on the golf course. He won the U.S. Amateur Championship four times (1907, 1908, 1912, 1913) and claimed the U.S. Open title in 1915, becoming one of only a few amateurs to achieve this feat.

Known for his unorthodox grip and smooth swing, Travers was celebrated for his strategic play.

His rivalry with fellow golfer Chick Evans added to his storied career. Travers retired from competitive golf at an early age, focusing on business and writing about the sport, including his book The Fifth Estate.

Despite his relatively short career, Travers' influence on golf was significant, showcasing the potential of amateur players in an era dominated by professionals. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1976, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest amateurs in golf history.
