A Vintage 1964 wire photo (5.5 x 8.75 inches) depicting the memorable moment when a bloody Y.A. Tittle of New York Giants got hit and tried to get up off the gridiron. The photograph captured by photographer Morris Berman of Tittle on his knees is amongst the most iconic images in the history of American sports and journalism, The offered photo is from the Associated Press and was taken seconds AFTER Berman's famed image. This was the play that basically ended Tittle’s career!
Tittle, who was in the final season of his career, was photographed helmet-less, bloodied and kneeling immediately after having been knocked to the ground by John Baker of the Pittsburgh Steelers and throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown at the old Pitt Stadium. The quarterback suffered both a concussion and cracked sternum on the play. He would go on to play out the rest of the season. Original press stamp and SEP 23 1964 stamp date are on the verso of this photo that was issued at the time the event happened!
