Art Rooney Signed AUTO 1970 Pittsburgh Steelers Payroll Check Signed by NFL Pro Football HOFer – Mel Blount Rookie Year
Art Rooney Sr. (D. 1988) often referred to as "the Chief", was the founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, an American football franchise in the National Football League (NFL), from 1933 until his death. Rooney is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was an Olympic qualifying boxer, and was part or whole owner in several track sport venues and Pittsburgh area pro teams. He was the first president of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1933 to 1974, and the first chairman of the team from 1933 to 1988.
Mel Blount (born April 10, 1948) is a Hall of Fame cornerback who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1970 to 1983. Known for his physical style, he was instrumental in redefining pass defense, leading to the "Mel Blount Rule," which limited contact with receivers beyond five yards. A five-time Pro Bowler and four-time Super Bowl champion, Blount was the 1975 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He recorded 57 career interceptions and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989. His dominance helped shape the legendary "Steel Curtain" defense of the 1970s.
Offered is a Pittsburgh Steelers payroll check made out to Mel Blount for $1862 dated November 16, 1970 (we presume this was the check cut for the Kansas City Chiefs game that the Steelers lost 31-14 on 11/15/1970) and signed on the front by Rooney and on the back by Mel Blount during his rookie season. Historic!
