Albersheim's 2015 June Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/7/2015
Having secured three straight National League titles, the 1897 Baltimore Orioles could have only succumbed to a collection of stalwarts, as no ordinary team had proved capable in recent memory. Playing on the popularity of baseball and that of its champion Orioles, executives arranged a West Coast tour that pitted the Orioles against the National League's finest stars.
This 10x8 photo combines 19th Century elements to promote the 1897 California Tour. Hall of Famer Hughie Jennings highlights the Baltimore player composites as do some handlebar mustaches and the pillbox caps with a cloth bird sewn to the front center (truly a decorative innovation at the time). Its images were arranged by San Francisco's "Marceau Foto," It was reproduced by the Baltimore Sun Newspaper in 1957 in honor of 60 years since the tour. An original photo sold back in 2008 for $12,000 in auction. You can own this 55 year old print for a fraction of that price.
