The success of the first two World Tournaments in 1939 and 1940 led to the establishment of the immediately popular College All-Star Basketball Classic. This would pit the Professional World Championship basketball team against a group of College All-Stars picked by note sports writers, namely Leo Fischer of the Herald-American (Chicago) and his editor, Harry Wilson and Harry Hannin. This would be much like the College All-Star football game held every year in Chicago vs the NFL Champs from the previous season. 1940 would be the first ever game of this sort where the All-Stars played the previous world champions, the Harlem Globetrotters and actually beating the Globies by a score of 44-42.
Building on the success of the first game of this type (in basketball in 1940), the organizers from the tournament planned a follow up game vs the winners of the World Tournament (held in March every year). There was one problem, the winners; the Detroit Eagles had disbanded. Thus, the Oshkosh All-Stars were selected as the professional team to face the collegians as they had come in second in the previous year’s tournament. The tournament in Chicago would go from 1940-55. This was the only 2nd game of its type ever!
HOF coach, Dutch Lonborg was again selected to coach the College All-Stars which featured college stars of the day, Bob Davies (HOF) George Sobek, Stan Stutz, Price Brookfield, Mickey Rottner, Bob Kinney, Don Smith, Joe Niland, and many other college stars of the day. Oshkosh featured some of the top pro talent of that era with stars such as Gene Englund, Eddie Riska, Lefty Edwards, Charlie Shipp, and Milo Komenich.
The College All-Stars would beat Oshkosh by a score of 35-33 while Bob Davies of the Collegians would be named the MVP (he’d later earn his way in the Naismith Basketball HOF).
