1953 Warriors vs Nationals Globetrotters vs Sphas basketball program with ticket stub

We offer a gorgeous program that came out of a sportswriter’s collection from November 1, 1953.  HOF’er, Easy Ed Macauley of the Celtics is on the cover.  As it was customary at the time, this game was a doubleheader played in Philadelphia.

The first game was the Philadelphia Sphas vs the Harlem Globetrotters and the second game was the main event – Philadelphia Warriors vs. Syracuse Nationals.  All pages are intact and it’s in pretty nice shape (no missing pages, binding tight).  There are some bonus articles stapled inside the program and a ticket stub from the game.  This game was played in Syracuse and features many local ads as well as pictures inside the program of Al Cervi, Paul Seymour, Jack Nichols, Daniel Biasone, Jim Pollard, Bob Brannum, George King, Billy Gabor, as well as many others.

The Trotters featured Wee Willie Gardner, Josh Grider, Goose Tatum, and Duke Cumberland.  The Warriors featured HOF’er – Neil Johnston, Sensesky, HOF’er – Joe Fulks, Ernie Beck, Joe Graboski.  While Syracuse featured George King, Paul Seymour, Earl Lloyd, and Wally Osterkorn, and Billy Gabor.

This was the largest crowd ever (up until this time in Syracuse) where the Nats beat the Warriors 85-61 in front of 7,859 fans for their home opener.  Schayes had 14 points and Johnston had 17 for the Warriors.  The Trotters beat the Sphas 81-46.  Both Tatum and Wilson had 23 points each in their slaughter of the Sphas.  Basketball HOF’er -  Sid Borgia was one of the refs in the game.
