Babe Ruth Signed 1936 AUTO GPC Government Postcard PSA/DNA

During the course of the 20th Century, the most famous man on the planet would have to be Babe Ruth. With that fame came great power and the Sultan of Swat loved his adoring fans.  In the annals of history; we’ve never heard of ‘ol George Herman Ruth turning down a request for an autograph.  However, despite the fact that he was always an obliging autograph signer; we can count on 2 hands how many autographed Government postcards that we’ve seen publicly offered over the course of our 4 decade collecting hobby.

Collecting government postcards signed by athletes began in the 1920s, but really hit its’ heyday as far as popularity from the 1940s – 1960s.  Autograph collectors could write a letter to their favorite ballplayer and instead of enclosing a more expensive Self Addressed Stamped Envelope, a young autograph enthusiast could enclose a penny postcard purchased from the post that their hero could sign and then just pop in the mailbox.  This made autograph collecting much more affordable when someone just wanted a signature.  The added bonus to this is that these postcards were then postmarked from the city they returned from and dated which gave the autograph a lasting documentation from the moment in time that it was signed.  On the flip side because these autographs were just thrown into the mail, they often arrived bent, smudged, and/or damaged.

This penny postcard was postmarked from NY, NY on November 16, 1936 and signed in black steel tipped pen. This superb, fresh-to-the-hobby example features a beautiful Babe Ruth signature which would be an outstanding addition to any collection and has been encapsulated authentic and graded an 8 out of 10 (under graded by our standards) by PSA/DNA.
