Berry Gordy (born November 28, 1929) is a legendary music executive, songwriter, and producer who founded Motown Records in 1959. Starting with an $800 loan from his family, Gordy built Motown in Detroit, creating the "Motown Sound" that blended pop, soul, and R&B, and revolutionized the music industry.
Under his leadership, Motown launched the careers of iconic artists like Diana Ross and The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Michael Jackson. Gordy was instrumental in shaping a crossover appeal for Black artists, making Motown a cultural phenomenon and a symbol of racial integration during the civil rights era.
In addition to his work as a producer and entrepreneur, Gordy co-wrote numerous hit songs, including "Money (That's What I Want)." His legacy as a visionary and pioneer earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
