·  Background:

  • Sigmund Freud, a Jewish Austrian, was a prominent figure in the field of psychology and psychoanalysis. His ideas and work were groundbreaking but also attracted significant controversy and opposition.

·  Rise of the Nazis:

  • In 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power in Germany. Their policies included persecution of Jews and intellectuals, which posed a grave threat to individuals like Freud.

·  Threat to Freud:

  • As the Nazis expanded their control over neighboring countries, the safety of Freud and his family was increasingly at risk. His works were banned, and he was subject to harassment and persecution.

·  Escape to London: Escape to London:

    • In June 1938, Freud and his family decided to leave Austria. They were able to secure permission to exit the country, but the Nazis imposed a significant "exit tax" on their assets and belongings.
    • Freud, his wife Martha, and their children Anna and Oliver, along with other family members and colleagues, made their way to London, where they settled in a house at 20 Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead. The home is now the Freud Museum.

Continued Work:

    • Despite the challenges and his advanced age, Freud continued his work in exile, including writing, until his death in 1939.

Sigmund Freud's escape from Austria and his subsequent life in London marked a significant moment in his personal history and the broader context of intellectual and cultural displacement due to Nazi persecution. His ideas and influence on the field of psychology and psychoanalysis have endured and continue to shape the discipline to this day.
