Despite losing four prime seasons to World War II and another to a fractured wrist, Hank Greenberg still walloped 331 home runs, including 40 or more on four occasions. The MVP in 1935, when he drove in 170 runs for the pennant-winning Tigers, the slugging right-hander drove in 183 runs in 1937. In 1938, he made a strong run at Babe Ruth's home-run record, finishing with 58. He hit .318 in four World Series with Detroit.

Offered is an 8.5” x 11” typed letter signed by Hank Greenberg as the GM of the Cleveland Indians dated July 1, 1949.  He writes to George Trautman, President of the National Association.

The letter discusses a complaint about player Henry A. Greifzu Jr. from the Fall River Baseball Club. Here's what it says:

The Cleveland Indians explain that player Greifzu reported to their spring training camp in Marianna, Florida in March 1949 as a member of the Harrisburg Baseball Club. During training, he developed back trouble and was sent home to recover, with plans to return when healthy.

The Indians had discussions with Harrisburg officials about Greifzu's condition. When Harrisburg wanted to reduce their roster, they asked if the Indians wanted to dispose of Greifzu. The Indians declined, saying they weren't interested in acquiring him at that time since they believed he could recover.

A few days later, the Indians learned that Greifzu had been sold outright to the Fall River Baseball Club for $300. Dick Porter, the Fall River manager, was unaware of Greifzu's physical condition. When Porter called asking about returning Greifzu to Harrisburg due to his bad back and inability to play, the Cleveland Baseball Club recommended that Harrisburg not accept the return of the player's contract.

The letter explains that due to the friendly relationship between Dick Porter and Harrisburg officials, Fall River had acquired several players from Harrisburg, most of whom were performing satisfactorily.

The letter concludes by suggesting that the National Association contact Harrisburg regarding Greifzu's physical condition to understand the situation prior to his sale to Fall River.

It's signed in blue ink by Hank Greenberg.
