Wiley Grinnell was, like most Texans, a football fan. He had played and coached the game for many years. He also was a Dallas Cowboys fan and was kidded constantly about how much he knew about the Cowboys. So for a birthday gift, his wife and son gave him a large hardback book entitled "Everything I Know About the Dallas Cowboys” by Wiley Grinnell.
He would either visit or send the actual book to the person, who would usually respond by writing a letter about the Cowboys and sending it back him. Most of the responses are actually written directly in the book. If someone would send back a separate letter, he would paste it into the book. His books were auctioned off many years ago and offered are select pages from one of the books that have been detached from the original document. Here is your chance to own a little bit of Coach Grinnell’s collection. The bulk of these letters were obtained from 1982 - 1984.
From one of his books is a letter from Lamar Hunt dated October 22, 1982. The letter measures 5” x 8” in size. Great content that he wrote back to Wiley about pro football. Gibbs writes,
“Willey—
It’s an honor to be asked to write a short note for your book. You have a very select group I don’t know how the coach of the Redskins qualifies but it was great of you to ask.
The game of football has a great group of people associated with it. And I’m proud to be a part of this profession. Even though we have some problems (strike), I enjoy the challenge associated with trying to win the Super Bowl.
God bless you and your family.
Joe Gibbs”
