John Hancock (January 23, 1737 – October 8, 1793) was a prominent American statesman and Founding Father. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts (now Quincy), he was the son of a clergyman and was raised by his wealthy uncle, Thomas Hancock, after his father's death. Hancock inherited a lucrative shipping business from his uncle, making him one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. He played a significant role in the American Revolution, serving as president of the Second Continental Congress and the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hancock was also the first and third governor of Massachusetts. He is best remembered for his bold and stylish signature on the Declaration of Independence.
