Durocher of the Dodgers and McKechnie of the Reds shake hands before the Grapefruit league opener on 3/19/1940 in Tampa, Fa. The Reds won the game 9 – 6.

Leo Durocher was a good-field, no-hit shortstop for 17 years, but gained his greatest notoriety for accomplishments after his playing days. His combative and swashbuckling style, brilliant baseball mind, uncanny memory and fiery disposition became "The Lip's" trademarks as a colorful and controversial manager for 24 seasons with the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs and Astros. He compiled 2,009 wins in 3,740 games, captured three pennants and won the World Series in 1954. He was named Manager of the Year three times by the Sporting News. Following his playing career he embarked on a successful and highly controversial managerial and coaching career that eventually resulted in his induction into the Hall of Fame in 1994.

Bill McKechnie (d 1965) was a player, manager and coach and the first manager to win World Series titles with two different teams (1925 Pittsburgh Pirates and 1940 Cincinnati Reds), and remains one of only two managers to win pennants with three teams, also capturing the National League title in 1928 with the St. Louis Cardinals. His 1,892 career victories ranked fourth in major league history when he ended his managing career in 1946, and trailed only John McGraw's NL total of 2,669 in league history. He was nicknamed "Deacon" because he sang in his church choir and generally lived a quiet life.

We offer an original ACME wire photo (6 x 8 inches) with the paper caption on the back and dated Aug 9, 1940. There’s a reference stamp on the back dated 3-19-1940. Nice pic!!
