A strong advocate of amateur basketball, Lynn St. John lobbied for formal national and international basketball rules for nearly three decades. A formidable administrator and a "master of diplomacy." St. John was appointed to the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee in 1912, a position he held for 25 years, the last eighteen as chairman. He served as a member of the 1936 Basketball Olympic Committee, and played an active role during the inaugural Olympic competition. The basketball arena at Ohio State University, where St. John coached (1912-1919) and later served as director of athletics (1915-47), is named in his honor. He died in 1950 and was elected to the Basketball HOF in 1962.
