San Francisco Saints vs Kansas City Steers ABL basketball Program & Ticket Stubs Nov. 1 & 3, 1961 – 1st game in Steers HISTORY

The American Basketball League played one full season, in 1961-1962, and part of 1962-1963. The league actually folded on December 31, 1962. The ABL was the first basketball league to have a three point shot for baskets scored far away from the goal. The league featured former  and future NBA players such as Larry Friend, George Yardley, Dick Barnett, Bill Bridges, Maurice King, Ben Warley, Gene Conley, Kenny Sears, Win Wilfong, and NBA banned players such as CONNIE HAWKINS, Bill Spivey, Tony Jackson, amongst others. 

We offer a program that covered the November 1st and 3rd games in 1961.  San Francisco Saints vs. Kansas City Saints.  This is from the first and only season of the San Francisco Franchise.  The Steers would play the Cleveland Pipers for the championship, but would lose 3-2.

The program measures 6.5 x 9.5. The binding is tight and no missing pages.  It features the Saints mascot/logo on the cover and has pictures of San Francisco players with bios inside the program that include Kenny Sears and Mike Farmer. Jack McMahon was the head coach for KC and Phil Woolpert for S.F who coached HOF’ers Bill Russell and K.C. Jones at the U of San Francisco.

This program dates from the Saints 2nd game in existence.  This was the FIRST regular season game for the Steers in franchise History.  

The first game the Saints  won 100-88 before 3,611 fans as Kenny Sears lead San Fran with 30 points, while Bill Bridges led KC with 33 points in a losing effort.   The program was scored from this game.

The November 3rd game, the Steers beat the Saints 83-77.  Bill Bridges led the Steers with 19 points while Jim Francis and Whitey Bell had 17 and 16 respectively for San Fran.

Included are ONE – ticket stub from the November 1, 1961 game and two from the November 3, 1961 game.
