The Yankees Take a Moment of Silence to Honor Thurman Munson August 3, 1979 Original TYPE III Photo PSA/DNA

From the SABR website, “The array of emotions ranged among shock, disbelief, anger, sadness, and frustration when news broke about the plane crash that took Thurman Munson’s life on August 2, 1979. Munson, who had been flying planes for several years, was practicing takeoffs and landing in his recently purchased twin-jet Cessna Citation. It was an off-day for the Yankees, and Munson was near his home in Canton, Ohio, at the Akron-Canton Airport with two friends, practicing with the Cessna.”

One day after his death, the Yankees honored him at Yankee Stadium (in a game Munson was supposed to play in). Offered is this 8” x 10” composite photograph taken by Yankees photographer, Louis Requena (his stamp on the back) showing the somber Yankees team lined up and taking a moment of silence in their game against the Baltimore Orioles. Requena has artistically cropped in an image of Thurman Munson who appears to be looking down at his teammates from heaven.
