Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 – November 28, 1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," which appear in his collection "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." Irving was born in New York City and initially pursued a career in law but turned to writing, achieving international fame. He also served as the U.S. Minister to Spain from 1842 to 1846. Irving is often called the "father of the American short story" for his early contributions to the genre.
