On opening day April 13, 1954, The Brooklyn Dodgers played the New York Giants right across town at the Polo Grounds. The Giants won that day 4-3.
Just back from military service, Willie Mays and Don Newcombe made their triumphant return to star with their respective teams. Later, the pair of former Negro Leaguers would headline a 1955 barnstorming tour together on an all-star squad that also featured Campy, Banks and Aaron.
Offered is this 4” x 5” original TYPE I Contact Photo, taken by notorious photographer, William Jacobellis, whose work was featured on some of the most important baseball cards of the 1950s.
This photograph derives from the Jacobellis "Golden Age of Baseball Cards" Archives that has been an influential contributor to the skyrocketing success of card-used Type I photos.
