Ernie Calverley Providence Steamrollers NBA Pioneer U of RI Basketball Coach Signed 3x5 Index Card

Ernie Calverley (D. 2003) was an American basketball guard for the University of Rhode Island. His famous "shot heard round the world," a midcourt shot, as time expired at Madison Square Garden in the National Invitation Tournament moved URI past Bowling Green State University into the semifinal round. The Rams would eventually lose in the NIT final against Adolph Rupp's Kentucky Wildcats. Calverley led the Basketball Association of America in assists per game in the league's first and second years, while playing for the Providence Steamrollers. In his rookie season, Calverley was selected to the All-BAA Second Team. After playing three seasons in the BAA, Caverley retired. He later returned to URI to coach the Rams and led them to two NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament appearances. He Also appeared in the 1948 Bowman Basketball set.
