In this photo, Ryun wins the Glenn Cunningham mile run with a time of 3:55.8 missing his American Record by half a second. Ryun was a world-class runner and the last American to hold the world record in the mile run. His career was highlighted by many world record times and a silver medal in the 1500 m at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Some of his awards include the Track & Field News Athlete of the Year award for both 1966 & 1967 (the first athlete to win this prestigious award two years in a row), the 1966 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year award, the 1966 James E. Sullivan Award, presented to the best amateur athlete in the U.S., and the 1966 ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year award.

He later became a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1996 to 2007, representing the 2nd District in Kansas.

This is an original 6.25” x 8.5” UPI photo with the original stamp on the back along with a reference stamp dated 4/26/1966. Also on the back is an attached photo caption dated 4/23/1966. Very unique shot!
