Offered is a group lot of six historical newspapers from 1945, each headlining pivotal moments in U.S. and World history.
Paper 1 – “U.S. Drops Atom Bomb On Hiroshima”: This is an original Los Angeles Herald Express newspaper dated 8/8/1945. The primary bold headline states in large print: “RUSSIA PROCLAIMS WAR AGAINST JAPAN” and above that the top of the page headline states “One Atom Bomb Kills 150,000 in Nip City.” The United States had dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima 2 days earlier. Other headlines on the front page are: “ORDER NEW ATOPM BLOWS TO END NIP WAR,” “Truman Breaks News, Says U.S. to Get Bases in Siberia,” “Moscow Edit Handed Nips,” “Japs Say Hiroshima Seared City of Dead.”
Paper 2 – “Nazi Surrender Complete”: This is an original Los Angeles Herald Express newspaper dated 5/8/1945. On the front page is a photo off the German’s surrender with caption “First Photo of Nazi Surrender.” Some other headlines on the front page are: “Churchill Tells of V-E Day’” “Truman Tells Victory, Says War Half Won,” “ Russ Battles Nazis.” “ Drama At Surrender Scene,” “Gen. Jodl Appeals For Allied Mercy.”
Paper 3 – “World War II in Europe Ends”: This is an original Los Angeles Examiner newspaper dated 5/9/1945. The primary headline reads: “LEADERS HAIL VICTORY, ALL EUROPE AT PEACE.” Some other headlines on the front page are: “Three Nations Join in Announcing End,” “Prague Nazis Cease War,” “’Our Victory But Half Won’, Says Truman, Urging Work,” and “Enoch Arden Wife Chooses First Husband.” This last headline refers to women who assumed their husbands at war had died and then re-married only to find their original husband was actually alive.
Paper 4 – “Roosevelt Dies”: This is an original Los Angeles Examiner newspaper dated 4/13/1945. The primary headline simply and boldly states in large print: “ROOSEVELT DIES.” Widely recognized as one of the greatest presidents in US history, FDR was in his 4th term when he passed from a stroke. The other headlines on the front page are: “PASSED DURING SLEEP; TRUMAN SWORN IN OFFICE,” and “Services Slated Saturday.”
Paper 5 – “Tokyo Surrenders”: This is an original Los Angeles Times dated 8/14/1945. The bold headline states: ‘”’WE GIVE UP!” TOKYO RADIOS’ as Japan has surrendered to the Allies during WWII. Other headlines on the front page are “Warren Will Not Take Senate Seat, ”Allied Potsdam Ultimatum Accepted in Message Nips Declare is Coming Soon,” “Eisenhower Denies Army Halted at Red Request,” “Late War Bulletins,” Cheers, Prayers, Mark Early Celebration Here,” and “Ration Books Printing Halts.”
Paper 6 – “Harry Truman Sworn in as US President”: This is an original and complete edition of the Los Angeles Herald Express newspaper dated 4/13/1945. On the front page is a picture of Truman being sworn in as president. The primary headline reads: “TRUMAN TO CARRY ON ALL F.D.R.POLICIES” and just above that in smaller print it says “F.D.R Starts Final Homeward Journey.” One article describes Roosevelt’s funeral service. Some other headlines on the front page are: “Funeral Services Saturday,” “Churchill Honors Memory of F.D.R.; Adjourns Commons,” “ Battle Nip Suicide Attacks,” “U.S. Army Outflanks Denmark,” “ Truman Summons War Chiefs,” “President Orders S.F. Meet To Go on a Scheduled,” “ Truman Proclaims Day Of Mourning Tomorrow.”
