1st African Americans to Participate in an MLB All-Star Game Jackie Robinson, Campanella, Doby, & Newcombe Original TYPE II photo PSA/DNA LOA

The 1949 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was a historic event because it featured the first African American players to participate in an All-Star Game. Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Don Newcombe, and Roy Campanella were indeed the pioneers in breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, and their participation in the 1949 All-Star Game was a significant moment in the integration of the sport.

·         Jackie Robinson: Robinson, who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, was the first African American to play in the Major Leagues in the 20th century. He made his Major League debut in 1947, and by 1949, he was already an established star in the league. Robinson represented the National League in the All-Star Game as the starting second baseman.

·         Larry Doby: Doby was the first African American player in the American League, breaking the color barrier just months after Robinson. In the 1949 All-Star Game, he represented the American League and played in the outfield.

·         Don Newcombe: Don Newcombe was a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers and was a significant figure in the integration of the sport. While he didn't pitch in the 1949 All-Star Game, he was part of the National League All-Star team.

·         Roy Campanella: Campanella, another Brooklyn Dodger, was the starting catcher for the National League in the 1949 All-Star Game.

The inclusion of these African American players in the 1949 All-Star Game was a landmark moment in baseball history, as it marked the beginning of the end of racial segregation in the sport and paved the way for the many talented African American players who followed in their footsteps.

Offered is this iconic 7” x 9” UPI press photo published between 1958-62 that used an original negative from 1949 to most likely run on the 10th anniversary of this HISTORIC event in MLB history.
