Baltimore Colts Jim O’Brien Kicks Game Winning Field Goal in Super Bowl V Original Oversized TYPE 1 Photo PSA/DNA LOA

In an article put out by the Baltimore Sun in 2021, Fifty years later, the memory lingers. Just before Super Bowl V, Jim O’Brien, the Colts’ field goal kicker, saw the future, fuzzy as it was.

“That week I had a dream that someone kicked the game-winner, but it wasn’t clear if it was [Dallas’] Mike Clark or me,” O’Brien said.

Time would tell. On Jan. 17, 1971, Baltimore defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 16-13, in Miami as O’Brien, a long-haired rookie, nailed a 32-yard field goal with nine seconds left to win the NFL championship. The white-knuckled finish spurred another Colt, safety Rick Volk, to wake up the next morning and dash out for a newspaper.

“I had to make sure that we’d won the game, and that I hadn’t imagined it,” Volk, 75, said.

These sentiments lingered throughout that Baltimore Colts team; many of whom had played just 2 years before in one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history, in a historic loss to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III.

Offered is the historic record of rookie kicker Jim O’Brien kicking the game winning field goal in Super Bowl V as the pigskin is about to sail over the goal post to capture a 16-13 victory overy the Dallas Cowboys for the Baltimore Colts only Super Bowl victory in NFL history.

This oversized crystal clear image measures 9.5” x 13.5” in size and taken by Chicago Daily News photographer, Don Bierman (who would later go on to be the photographer whose image of Michael Jordan in his first NBA game would grace the front page of sports sections all over America a decade later).  Stamped on back by the newspaper, photographer, and stamp dated January 18, 1971 (the day after the game).
