Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles were an American girl group that became one of the foundational acts in R&B music. Formed in the early 1960s, the group initially consisted of Patricia "Patti" Holte (later known as Patti LaBelle), Cindy Birdsong, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash. They were originally known as "The Ordettes," but after signing with Newtown Records in 1961, they were renamed "The Blue Belles" and then "Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles."
The group's first major hit came in 1962 with "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," which reached the Top 20 on the Billboard pop charts. This success catapulted them into the limelight, leading to appearances on popular television shows and nationwide tours. Their early sound was rooted in doo-wop and pop, reflecting the musical landscape of the early 1960s. However, they were also known for their powerful harmonies and emotional performances, which laid the groundwork for Patti LaBelle's future as a solo powerhouse.
