Roger Maris July 9, 1961 Yankees ticket stub Home Run #33 plus 2 Programs

It’s pretty much common knowledge that during the 1961 Major League baseball season, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were chasing the ghost of Babe Ruth; vying for the single season home run record. With Mantle’s injuries, Maris was able to jump out ahead and eventually broke the Babe’s record on October 1, 1961 with home run #61 off Boston pitcher, Tracy Stallard.

On July 9, 1961, the Yankees would lay the Red Sox in a Sunday doubleheader at Yankee Stadium; splitting the 2 games by winning the first game 3-0 with Rollie Sheldon of the Yankees taking the W. Maris would hit home run #33 off Bill Monbouquette in the 7th inning with zero on and one out deep between center and right field.

The Yanks would lose the second one by a score of 9-6 with Don Schwall taking the win for the Red Sox and Arnold Earley, earning the save. Bobby Richardson would get a HR in the 6th inning with Mantle earning a triple during the second game.

Although not super common, programs and ticket stubs from HR #61 can be fairly easily attained. Even then, they tended to bring several thousand dollars! However, finding tickets during the season from Maris’ other HR games can be a daunting task.

Offered is a ticket stub from the game that was originally stapled to one of the 2 programs (one program from each game that day). The ticket has a horizontal crease, but might rate a VG condition before some eyes. Very rare! As a bonus, you get both programs from the doubleheader that are scored.
