Everyone knows that Jackie Robinson broke the color line in Major League baseball, but it would take almost 20 years for Major League baseball to hire a black Umpire. This original 10x8 UPI photo (with stamp and caption on back) shows Ashford reading the Sporting News on 3-3-66 in his L.A. home. The caption reads that he is the first Negro named to be an umpire in Major League Baseball. HISTORIC!!!
