Francis Scott Key – “The Star-Spangled Banner” Signed Cut Document PSA/DNA

Francis Scott Key (August 1, 1779 – January 11, 1843) was an American lawyer and poet best known for writing the lyrics to the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." During the War of 1812, Key witnessed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry and was inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn. He penned the poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry," which later became the national anthem1. Key practiced law for over 40 years, arguing cases before the Supreme Court and serving as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. He was also a devout Episcopalian and owned slaves, though he later provided legal representation to some seeking freedom
