1940 Yakima Pippins Team Signed AUTO baseball /w Sal Madrid & Roy Chesterfield 1927 Yankees PSA/DNA LOA

Offered is this Official Western International League ball signed in black fountain pen by seventeen members of the 1940 Yakima Pippins, a member of the Western International League.

Notably, are two VERY RARE & TOUGH AUTOGRAPHS ON THE BALL

Although this is what most collectors would consider an obscure minor league team-signed ball, it is notable for the inclusion of one signature: Roy Chesterfield. Chesterfield, a pitcher, was in training camp with the 1927 New York Yankees and spent some time with the club at the start of the season. Unfortunately for him, he never appeared in a regular-season game and is therefore not listed on the club’s official roster that year. Yet, he was in uniform with the club that season, making his autograph especially desirable for completist 1927 New York Yankees autograph collectors. Chesterfield did appear in some 1927 Yankees team photos.  Chesterfield was actually an umpire in the Western League in 1940, so we must presume that an enterprising fan actually asked him to sign this ball.

Sal Madrid (D. 1977) – considered one of the toughest debut player’s autographs to obtain from the 1940’s.  He played in a total of 8 games for the 1947 Cubs before heading back to the minors.  He passed away at the age of 56 and for some reason; is a nearly impossible autograph to obtain.

Also included are:

Manager - Goldie Holt (D. 1991) who played 23 years of minor league ball, but also coached for the Pirates (1948-50) and the Cubs (1961-65).  He also scouted and managed in the Dodgers farm system.

Charley Schanz (D. 1992) 1940’s – 50’s Phillies & Red Sox
