Charley Lau (d.1984) Signed Oakland A’s Athletics Payroll Check from 1970

Charley Lau (D. 1984 at age 50) was a Major League catcher and played from 1956-67, including the 1966 Orioles.  He later became a very popular hitting coach and probably became the most famous hitting coach in baseball throughout the 1970’s until his death in 1984.  Lau also appeared in the film Max Dugan Returns as himself. The title character (played by Jason Robards) pays Lau to teach his grandson (Matthew Broderick's character) how to hit.

Offered is a payroll check from July 9, 1970 (his only year as a coach with the A’s) for 192.24 made out to Lau and signed by him on the back.  A's payroll checks are seldom seen (we lucked out and were able to purchase 6 from a long- time collection; this being one of them).
