Samuel Finley Breese Morse (April 27, 1791 – April 2, 1872) was an American painter and inventor best known for developing the electric telegraph and Morse code. Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Morse initially pursued a career in art, studying in Europe and becoming a successful portrait painter. However, his interest in electricity led him to invent the telegraph in the 1830s. With the help of Alfred Vail, he developed Morse code, a system of representing letters and numbers using dots and dashes.
